Trenchless Sewer Repair
Expert Trenchless Sewer Repair in Seattle, King & Pierce Counties
Don’t let a broken sewer line destroy your landscaping, driveway, or patio. In the past, replacing a collapsed or heavily damaged sewer line meant bringing in heavy excavators to dig a massive, destructive trench through your yard. Today, Grindstone Guys uses advanced trenchless technology to repair or replace your underground pipes with minimal digging across Seattle, King County, and Pierce County.
We save your lawn, protect your hardscaping, and restore your home’s plumbing system faster and more efficiently than traditional methods.
What is Trenchless Sewer Repair?
Trenchless technology allows our licensed plumbers to rehabilitate or entirely replace your underground sewer and water lines without trenching the entire length of the pipe. By creating just one or two small access pits, we can work from the inside out, saving you thousands of dollars in landscaping and driveway restoration costs.
Signs You Need a Sewer Line Repair
Because sewer lines are buried deep in the damp Pacific Northwest soil, it can be hard to know when they are failing until a backup occurs. Watch out for these warning signs:
Frequent Sewer Backups
If water backs up into your ground-floor bathtubs or basement drains when you flush a toilet, the main line is compromised.Lush, Soggy Patches in the Yard
A broken sewer line leaks nutrient-rich wastewater into your lawn, causing unusually green or fast-growing patches of grass.Indentations in the Lawn
If the soil above a collapsed pipe begins to sink, you will notice divots or trenches forming in your yard.Constant Root Intrusions
If we are hydro jetting tree roots out of your sewer line every few months, the pipe is badly cracked and needs a permanent trenchless liner.
Our Trenchless Repair Process
We rely on high-tech diagnostics to ensure trenchless repair is the right solution for your specific property.
Step 1
HD Camera Inspection
We send a high-resolution camera down the line to visually assess the damage. We must ensure the pipe hasn’t completely collapsed or lost its structural slope (a “belly”).
Step 2
Cleaning and Prepping
Using high-pressure hydro jetting, we scour the inside of the pipe to remove all roots, grease, and scale so the new trenchless material can adhere perfectly.
Step 3
Trenchless Application
Depending on the damage, we either insert an epoxy-resin liner (CIPP) that cures inside the old pipe, or we use a hydraulic bursting head to pull a brand-new pipe through the old one.
Step 4
Final Video Verification
We run the camera down the newly formed line to ensure it is perfectly sealed, structurally sound, and ready for decades of use.
Trenchless Solutions: CIPP Lining vs. Pipe Bursting
We offer two primary trenchless methods to solve your sewer problems. We will help you choose the right one based on the condition of your existing pipe.
| Feature | CIPP Pipe Lining (Cured-In-Place Pipe) | Pipe Bursting |
| How It Works | An epoxy-saturated felt tube is inserted into the existing pipe, inflated, and cured to create a “pipe within a pipe.” | A conical bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, shattering it outward while simultaneously dragging a new HDPE pipe into its place. |
| Best Used For | Sealing cracks, bridging missing sections, and stopping tree root intrusions in pipes that still maintain their general shape. | Entirely replacing severely degraded clay, cast iron, or Orangeburg pipes, or up-sizing the diameter of the line. |
| Digging Required | Usually requires only one small access point (often a cleanout). | Requires two access pits: one at the start of the line and one at the city connection. |
| Lifespan | 50+ Years | 50 to 100+ Years |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is trenchless sewer repair more expensive than traditional digging?
In almost all cases, trenchless repair is more cost-effective. While the specialized materials for trenchless cost a bit more upfront, you eliminate the massive expense of hiring contractors to repave your driveway, rebuild your patio, or re-sod your entire lawn after the plumbers leave.
How long does a trenchless sewer repair take?
Most trenchless jobs are completed in a single day. Traditional trenching can take several days of heavy excavation, disrupting your neighborhood and keeping your water shut off longer.
Will trenchless pipe lining reduce the size of my sewer pipe?
Technically, CIPP lining does reduce the internal diameter of the pipe by a fraction of an inch. However, the new epoxy interior is so incredibly smooth that it actually increases the flow rate of the water and waste, making the pipe more efficient than it was originally.
Can any broken pipe be fixed with trenchless technology?
Not all of them. If the pipe has completely collapsed, is heavily crushed, or has a severe "belly" (a sag where water pools constantly), trenchless lining cannot fix it because it follows the existing shape of the old pipe. In those specific cases, traditional excavation or pipe bursting is required.
